During the Senator McCarthy hearings about Communists in the Army during 1953 to 1955, I refused to sign a new loyalty oath that the Senator, in his war with the Army, imposed upon the Army. “Why?” was my response to most of the orders barked at me. From Fort Jackson, South Carolina to Anchorage, Alaska, I was on the brink of the stockade, all the while reading and talking about intellectual nonfiction and avant garde fiction and writing my first and second novel, along with plays, poems, and essays.
